Senior Services - Special Events
The Department of Parks and Recreation's (DPR) Senior Services Division hosts a number of special events for seniors every year. More information about each of these events is provided below.
- DC Golden Olympics - An annual event co-sponsored by DPR and the DC Office on Aging, this four day event and competition is devoted to senior athletes ages 50 and above. 2008 marked the 25th year of these exciting games in DC.
- Senior Luncheon Cruise - An annual boat ride which includes a buffet lunch, music from a Broadway Musical, and dancing while cruising down the Potomac River.
- Senior Picnic - An annual event that provides food, fun, entertainment and socialization for senior citizens throughout the District. The 2008 Senior Picnic will be held at the Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, where seniors will be able to swim in the spacious indoor pool and enjoy the beautiful grounds.
- Grandparents Banquet - This annual event is usually held in conjuction with the 19th Street Baptist Church, and grandparents are treated to a magnificent meal and lots of music and prizes.
- Senior Fun Camp - An annual end of summer week long event held at DPR's Camp Riverview along the shores of the Potomac River in Scotland, MD. This year the event will be held August 25 - 29, 2008. Seniors enjoy theme days, dancing, arts and crafts, bingo, classes, movies and more!
- Elder Fest - An annual citywide event and celebration held with the DC Office on Aging for area seniors. The day includes entertainment, food, exhibits, music, and handmade arts and crafts will be for sale.
- Senior Fashion Show - This event brings together seniors from a variety of backgrounds to express their creativity through inner beauty and fashion. Showcasing the latest and up to date fashions and featuring seniors from recreation centers across the District.
