Environmental Education

treeThe DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Environmental Education program works with District residents of all ages to build a greater awareness and understanding of the natural environment in and beyond the District of Columbia.

The District of Columbia enjoys an incredible wealth of parks and green space and our residents enjoy more public parkland per capita than almost any other densely populated U.S. city – 16 acres for every 1,000 residents – offering natural areas, parks, and recreational facilities.

DPR Environmental Education offers classes, workshops, and special events throughout the year and provides community gardens and environmental education centers for the use and enjoyment of District residents.

Environmental Education Centers and Community Gardens
DPR operates two Environmental Education Centers - Twin Oaks Garden and Lederer Environmental Education Center - which offer environmental and gardening programs and workshops year-round for residents of all ages.  Both centers feature community gardens which are open during the growing season.  DPR's Environmental Education Centers and community gardens are open to anyone who shares an interest in the environment and a desire to learn about the wonders of nature.
